从水井中提取地下水的办法，是用桶由人力提升到地面，孔颖达疏中称：“古者穿地取水，以瓶引汲，谓之为井。”这种办法在很多地方依然在使用。这种办法的缺点是，由于井口裸露，水质容易受污染，效率较低，同时，井深有限。
